Petrochemicalsolefins, polymers & aromatics

Steam crackers (naphtha, ethane, LPG or dual/mixed feed) and on-purpose propylene units convert hydrocarbons into ethylene, propylene, butadiene and aromatics, which are polymerised or converted into PE, PP, PVC, MEG, PX/PTA and other intermediates. Economics are set by product-minus-feed spreads, feedstock advantage (US/ME ethane vs Asian naphtha) and scale/integration with refineries. 2025-26 combines a structural global oversupply (China-led additions, cycle trough expected ~2028-29) with an acute 2026 Hormuz supply shock that spiked spreads, while India pursues ~USD 37bn of import-substituting capacity (e.g. HMEL, IOCL Paradip, BPCL Bina).

United StatesEthane-advantaged (Henry Hub ~$3, ethane surplus in H2-2026) but margins eroding; Golden Triangle (2027) and export-driven PE. PE–ethane spread spiked to $1,425/t in Q2-2026. IRA/OBBBA changes limit low-carbon cracker incentives; Gulf Coast labour constraints.
EuropeHigh gas/power and ETS costs; wave of cracker closures (≈4.3 Mt ethylene exiting by 2027); Ineos Project ONE (EUR 5bn) the only new cracker, delayed to 2027. CBAM/ETS scope expansion and recycled-content rules shape investment.
Middle EastCost-advantaged ethane/LPG producers (SABIC, Borouge, QatarEnergy, Sadara) are India's largest polymer suppliers; 2026 Hormuz disruption stranded exports and LPG/naphtha feed for Asia, highlighting single-chokepoint risk.
Asia-PacificChina self-sufficiency and exports pressure margins; Japan/Korea/Taiwan rationalising naphtha crackers; >60% Asian naphtha from the ME.

Revenue model

Sale of polymers (PE, PP, PVC), MEG/aromatics and co-products (pygas, C4/butadiene, fuel gas, hydrogen). Indian producers price at import parity (CFR India + duty + logistics); margin = product value minus feedstock (naphtha/LPG/ethane, often transferred from the integrated refinery at export-parity) minus utilities.

Margin driver

PE minus naphtha spread

How Capibud uses this pack

A pack is a starting position, not a forecast. When a petrochemicals decision opens in Capibud, pack v1.0.0 is copied in and pinned to that decision. The 28 parameters, 12 swing factors and templates the committee saw stay attached to the decision record, even after the pack is next refreshed.

Parameter ranges and WBS durations seed the P50, P80 and P90 for capex, schedule and value. Your own estimates, vendor quotes and actuals replace pack defaults line by line, and the record shows which numbers are still defaults.

Each swing factor is wired to shared factors; here the heaviest are labour, policy, steel and oil. A move in one factor hits every exposed project in the same scenario, which is how the capital committee sees concentration across a book rather than project by project.

The 24 price feeds and 32 listed tickers feed the brain, which watches for drivers moving outside their pack range and drafts the change for a person to review.
