Automotive manufacturingvehicle plants, components, battery packs
Greenfield and brownfield vehicle assembly plants (press, body, paint, general assembly), powertrain/EV battery-pack lines and tier-1 component plants. India (world #3 by production, ~USD 250bn) is adding capacity (Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, M&M, VinFast's Thoothukudi plant opened Dec 2025); the US is reshoring behind 25% s232 auto tariffs but cancelling/reshaping EV and battery projects (US manufacturing construction −19% y/y); Europe is restructuring (VW to cut ~50,000 German jobs by 2030; Northvolt bankrupt). Capex is equipment-heavy and highly exposed to demand, policy and supply-chain shocks.

Trends and research findings
Trends
- US auto tariffs reshape footprints2025-2028
25% s232 tariffs on imported cars (and on parts from May 2025, USMCA-compliant parts exempt); SCOTUS struck down IEEPA tariffs in Feb 2026, leaving s232 as the main tool; effective US tariff rate ~12.1% (Jul 2026).
- US factory construction retreat2025-2027
US manufacturing construction spending fell to USD 170.7bn SAAR (Aug 2026), −19% y/y and well below the USD 250bn peak, as EV/battery projects were cancelled or delayed.
- European restructuring2025-2030
Volkswagen plans ~50,000 German job cuts by 2030 (Jul 2026) amid Chinese competition and US tariffs; Northvolt bankruptcy (Mar 2025) set back EU cell ambitions.
- India capacity build-out2025-2030
India is the world's #3 auto producer (~USD 250bn, 2025); VinFast's Tamil Nadu plant opened Dec 2025 after 17 months; Hyundai weighs a third plant by 2030.
- Chinese OEM globalisation2025-2030
BYD exports from Thailand to Europe (Aug 2025) to avoid EU duties; Malaysia CKD plans reconsidered (Mar 2026) over export/localisation conditions.
- Labour/immigration risk on US megasites2025-2027
Federal raid at Hyundai's Georgia battery site (4 Sep 2025) detained ~450 workers, delaying the JV ramp.
Research findings
- Modular/repeatable projects outperform
Flyvbjerg et al. (2026): 'modular native' project types (solar, wind, transmission, pipelines, roads) average 1.12 cost ratio vs 1.54 for others — repeatable factory templates should be benchmarked toward the lower class.
- US demand softening
US total vehicle sales 16.38m SAAR in Sep 2026, −3.4% y/y, after a 2025 tariff pull-forward.
- Input inflation vs pricing
US motor-vehicle parts PPI +5.7% y/y vs motor vehicles PPI +1.5% y/y (Aug 2026) — margin squeeze for OEMs.
- Fast-build benchmark
VinFast's Thoothukudi plant was completed in 17 months and inaugurated 15 Dec 2025, while its North Carolina plant slipped from 2024 to 2028.
- Battery-plant failure case
Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in Sweden on 12 Mar 2025 and halted remaining production by June 2025 despite multi-billion funding.
- Chinese OEM over-capacity signal
BYD cut its 2025 sales target by up to 16% to 4.6m units (Sep 2025) after a 29.9% y/y Q2 profit decline.

Regional notes
| India | World #3 producer; strong PV/2W demand, PLI-Auto and ACC-battery PLI, PM E-DRIVE; greenfield plants built in 17-30 months (VinFast, Maruti Kharkhoda) at very low capex per unit; state incentive packages and land allotment drive siting; localisation >80% for majors (estimate). |
|---|---|
| United States | 25% s232 tariffs on imported vehicles/parts (USMCA exemptions) and 50% on metals; EV/battery plant cancellations (manufacturing construction −19% y/y); immigration enforcement risk on megasites; SAAR 16.4m (Sep 2026). |
| Europe | CO2 fleet targets with flexibility; Chinese competition and EU countervailing duties on Chinese EVs; restructuring (VW ~50,000 job cuts by 2030); battery ambitions dented by Northvolt. |
| Middle East | Saudi (Lucid, Ceer) assembly ambitions; 2026 war disrupts regional demand and logistics. |
| Asia-Pacific | China over-capacity and export push (BYD); ASEAN hubs (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam) for Chinese/Vietnamese OEMs. |

How Capibud uses this pack
A pack is a starting position, not a forecast. When a automotive manufacturing decision opens in Capibud, pack v1.0.0 is copied in and pinned to that decision. The 14 parameters, 11 swing factors and templates the committee saw stay attached to the decision record, even after the pack is next refreshed.
Parameter ranges and WBS durations seed the P50, P80 and P90 for capex, schedule and value. Your own estimates, vendor quotes and actuals replace pack defaults line by line, and the record shows which numbers are still defaults.
Each swing factor is wired to shared factors; here the heaviest are policy, electrical equipment, labour and steel. A move in one factor hits every exposed project in the same scenario, which is how the capital committee sees concentration across a book rather than project by project.
The 17 price feeds and 29 listed tickers feed the brain, which watches for drivers moving outside their pack range and drafts the change for a person to review.
